It's set in Washington DC, but a lot of Brits are involved

This is a British co-production made by Working Title Films, the company behind such varied hits as Burn After Reading, Frost/Nixon, United 93 and The Boat That Rocked. Look out for another Working Title thriller coming soon - Green Zone starring Matt Damon. The director of State of Play is Kevin McDonald from Glasgow, who previously made the award-winning hit, The Last King of Scotland, and two cracking documentaries - Touching the Void and One Day in September. If you haven't seen these, treat yourself to a viewing one day soon. Also, Dame Helen Mirren plays a key role in State of Play, and the film is based on a British TV series.

Which series?

State of Play was a highly acclaimed 6-part BBC thriller originally broadcast in 2003. It starred John Simm, David Morrissey, Kelly Macdonald and Bill Nighy who won a BAFTA award for his performance. The TV serial was directed by David Yates (now directing the Harry Potter adventures) from a script brilliantly written by Paul Abbott. Abbott serves as an executive producer on the big-screen version of State of Play, which has a screenplay by Tony Gilroy, writer of the Jason Bourne blockbusters.

Who's in State of Play?

The film has a top-flight cast. Russell Crowe stars as Cal McCaffrey, Rachel McAdams is fellow reporter Della Frye, Helen Mirren exudes authority as their editor, and Ben Affleck portrays Congressman Stephen Collins. In supporting roles you’ll see Jeff Daniels, Robin Wright Penn, Jason Bateman and many others.

Russell Crowe is one of the great movie actors of his generation

Truly. Among many awards to date, he won an Oscar® for his performance in Gladiator. He seems to embody and inhabit every character he plays - just think of A Beautiful Mind, The Insider, Master and Commander, American Gangster and Body of Lies. He appears quite different in every film - and State of Play gives him another memorable leading role.

What's the certificate?
